Quick answer

How much do solar panels cost in the North East?

A 4kW solar panel system in the North East costs £4,999–£5,499 fully installed in 2026. A typical Newcastle, Sunderland or Durham home generates 3,200–3,700 kWh/yr, saving around £820 a year on electricity bills with payback in 6–8 years. Solar installations qualify for 0% VAT until March 2027, and surplus generation earns up to 15p/kWh through the Smart Export Guarantee.

Why solar in 2026, and why us

4kW system across Newcastle, Sunderland and County Durham delivers 3,200–3,700 kWh annually (NE irradiance ~950 kWh/kWp/yr — Met Office), covering 60–80% of the electricity demand of a typical household once paired with a 10kWh battery and a time-of-use tariff. Solar PV is mature technology — panel prices have dropped 70% in the last ten years and inverter quality has improved alongside.

What separates a good install from a poor one is no longer the panels — they're commodity. It's the survey methodology, the inverter design choice, the mounting kit, the electrical install quality and the Smart Export Guarantee registration. That's where AMP earns its margin.

Solar panel cost

How much do solar panels cost in 2026?

A typical 4kW solar panel installation in the UK costs between £4,999 and £5,499 fully fitted in 2026. Smaller 3kW systems start around £3,999; larger 6-10kW installs run £6,500–£9,500. Adding battery storage adds £3,500 (5kWh) to £10,000+ (15kWh). All figures are guide prices for a typical property — final quotes are fixed-price after survey.

Property type System size Solar only + Battery
Small terrace / 2-bed flat 3kW (8 panels) £3,999–£4,499 +£3,500 for 5kWh
2-3 bed semi 4kW (10 panels) £4,999–£5,499 +£3,500–£5,000 for 5kWh
3-4 bed detached 6kW (15 panels) £6,500–£7,500 +£4,500–£6,500 for 10kWh
4-5 bed detached / HMO 8kW (20 panels) £8,000–£9,200 +£5,500–£7,500 for 10-15kWh
Large detached / multi-zone 10kW+ (25+ panels) £9,500–£14,000 +£6,000–£10,000 for 15kWh+

Prices are turnkey, including panels, hybrid inverter, mounting kit, all electrical work, scaffolding (2-storey), install registration, Northern Powergrid DNO notification and SEG application. Three-storey properties, listed buildings, conservation areas or unusual roof access add quoted-in-advance scaffolding cost.

What's included in every AMP solar quote

  • Tier-1 solar panels. All Bloomberg NEF Tier 1 with 25-year performance warranty at 88-92% output — full panel, inverter and battery brand comparison below.

  • NICEIC-certified electrical install. Consumer-unit integration, dedicated isolator, surge protection, earthing assessment.
  • Scaffolding for two-storey properties. Three-storey supplements quoted in advance, never on the day.
  • Northern Powergrid DNO notification. G98/G99 handled — you never speak to the DNO.
  • install certificate. Issued within 10 working days of install.
  • SEG registration. We help you choose a Smart Export Guarantee supplier and register with them.
  • 10-year workmanship guarantee. AMP-backed, on top of manufacturer warranties.
  • Monitoring app. Real-time generation visibility through your inverter's cloud platform.

Spread the cost

Spread the cost of your solar install

Cash from savings remains the cheapest route — a typical solar install pays back in 6-9 years with no interest to service. If you would rather keep your savings in place, there are two well-priced ways to spread the cost.

0% finance on selected packages

Available on selected solar, battery and EV charger packages through our consumer credit partner — typically 12-24 month repayment terms, subject to status and affordability checks. Not all packages or applicants qualify.

Green mortgage top-ups

Several mortgage lenders offer additional borrowing for renewable upgrades. Spread over the mortgage term, the monthly payment typically sits below the monthly bill saving — worth a conversation with your mortgage broker before committing.

Cash is still the cheapest

No interest, no monthly payments, no credit applications. Solar's typical 6-9 year payback makes cash from savings one of the strongest deployments of a lump sum available to UK households — we will always show you the cash price alongside any finance quote.

Illustrative example — solar at 0%

A £4,999 system over 24 months at 0% works out at £208/month, against a typical £68/month bill saving plus SEG export income. Once the 24 months are done, the saving and export income carry on for the life of the system.

Smart Export Guarantee

Smart Export Guarantee — what you'll get paid for surplus solar

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is the post-2020 replacement for the original Feed-in Tariff. Licensed electricity suppliers are legally required to offer SEG tariffs to anyone with an fully-certified solar installation under 5MW and a smart meter sending half-hourly readings. Each supplier sets its own rate — they vary dramatically.

Supplier Export rate Notes
Octopus Outgoing Fixed ~15p/kWh Best mainstream rate. Smart meter required.
Tesla Energy Plan up to 24p/kWh Highest in UK. Requires Tesla Powerwall battery.
British Gas Export & Earn ~6-15p/kWh Bundle options for British Gas import customers.
EDF Export+ ~7-10p/kWh Available with import too.
Eon Next Export ~3-7p/kWh Lower but no import-supplier switch needed.
OVO Energy SEG ~4-6p/kWh Standard rate, broad availability.

You're free to choose any SEG supplier regardless of who supplies your import electricity. We help you compare and switch as part of the install. A typical 4kW system in the North East exports 1,200-1,800 kWh per year (without a battery) — at 15p/kWh that's £180-£270 of annual export income on top of bill savings.

Adding a battery cuts SEG income (because more solar is self-consumed) but increases overall savings significantly more than the lost export income. The trade is almost always worth making.

Your protection

What's actually guaranteed — and by whom

Every component on your roof carries its own warranty, and the install itself carries ours. Here's the full stack on a typical AMP solar install — full detail on our warranty page.

Layer Cover Backed by
Solar panels 25-yr product / 30-yr performance JA Solar, Trina, Longi — Bloomberg NEF Tier 1 manufacturers
Inverter 10-12 yrs standard Solis extendable to 20 yrs, SolarEdge extendable to 25 yrs
Mounting kit Per manufacturer spec K2 / Schletter — weatherproofed to the published fixing schedule
Workmanship 10 yrs AMP Renewables — covers the install itself, on top of manufacturer cover

What happens if something fails

You call us, not the manufacturer. Within the 10-year workmanship period, AMP diagnoses the fault, handles the manufacturer warranty claim on your behalf and does the replacement work. A failed inverter — the most common fault on any solar system — is typically swapped within days under the manufacturer warranty, with no labour charge from us. Panel failures are rare; when they happen, the 25-year product warranty covers the replacement panel and we cover the roof work.

What NICEIC certification actually covers

NICEIC registration means our electrical work is independently assessed against BS 7671 wiring regulations, and every install is certificated and notifiable. It also gives you the NICEIC Platinum Promise — if our electrical work is found non-compliant and we don't put it right, NICEIC will. That's a genuine third-party backstop on the part of the install most likely to cause real problems: the electrics.

If you want to escalate

If something goes wrong and you're not happy with how we've handled it, we publish a formal complaints procedure with response timescales and the independent escalation routes available to you — including NICEIC's own complaints process for electrical work. You never have to rely on goodwill alone.

Solar panel FAQs

How much do solar panels cost?

A typical 4kW home solar system starts from £4,500 installed. The exact cost depends on your roof size, orientation, and the number of panels needed. We provide a free, no-obligation survey and quote.

How much can I save with solar panels?

Most homeowners save between 50-70% on their electricity bills. With the Smart Export Guarantee, you can also earn money by exporting surplus energy back to the grid.

How long do solar panels last?

Modern solar panels typically last 25-30 years and come with manufacturer warranties of up to 25 years. Performance degrades very slowly — most panels still produce 80%+ of their original output after 25 years.

Will solar panels work on my roof?

Solar panels work on most roof types and orientations. South-facing roofs are ideal, but east and west-facing roofs also perform well. Our 3D roof mapping technology will show you exactly how much energy your roof can generate.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

In most cases, residential solar panels fall under permitted development and don't require planning permission. There are some exceptions for listed buildings, conservation areas, and certain roof types. We handle all the paperwork for you.
