What's actually in the bill

  • Battery unit and battery management system. The biggest single line. LFP chemistry dominates new installs in 2026 — safer, longer-cycle than older NMC cells.
  • Inverter (or hybrid). Bundled into the price for new solar+battery installs. AC-coupled retrofits use a separate battery inverter.
  • EPS sub-board. Where you want grid-outage backup, a dedicated consumer-unit feeds critical circuits during a power cut. Tesla Powerwall does whole-home backup without this sub-board.
  • NICEIC-certified electrical install. All cabling, isolators, RCD protection, surge protection.
  • Mounting and casework. Wall-bracket or floor-mounted depending on space and unit type.
  • DNO notification. G98 for batteries up to 3.68kW per phase; G99 for larger units (Tesla Powerwall and stacked battery packs typically need G99).

What happens if something fails

Call our office on 0191 535 2711. We diagnose the issue — often by phone or remote app access — work out which warranty applies, and either fix it on a scheduled visit or coordinate the manufacturer claim for you. You never need to contact the manufacturer directly.

What NICEIC certification actually covers

Every battery install is carried out and certified by our NICEIC-registered engineers. That means the electrical work — cabling, isolation, RCD and surge protection — is certified to BS 7671, and the notifiable work is registered with Building Control on your behalf, with the certificate issued to you.

A home battery only saves money if you're on a time-of-use tariff that has a meaningful gap between off-peak and peak rates. The current UK options:

Emergency Power Supply

EPS — what happens to your home during a power cut

Northern Powergrid network reliability across the North East is among the better in the UK, but unplanned outages do happen — typically 1-3 per year for an average household, usually lasting under an hour. An Emergency Power Supply (EPS) configuration means your home automatically transfers to battery power within seconds of grid failure, with no action needed from you.

Whole-home backup (Tesla Powerwall)

Tesla Powerwall does full-home backup as standard — every circuit stays live during the outage. The 13.5kWh capacity supports a typical 3-4 bed home for 8-16 hours of essentials operation, or 4-6 hours with full normal usage including electric showers, induction hob, and any heat pump operation.

Critical-circuits backup (SolarEdge, Solis)

A dedicated sub-consumer-unit feeds your chosen "critical circuits" during a grid outage. Typically: lighting, internet/comms, fridge/freezer, boiler controls, gas heating, and one or two ring-mains. A 10kWh battery feeding critical circuits supports a typical home for 16-30 hours.

Cost of adding EPS

Tesla Powerwall includes whole-home EPS in the base price. SolarEdge and Solis critical-circuits EPS add approximately £400-700 to the install (sub-board, additional cabling, transfer switch). Whether the additional cost is worth it depends on how much you'd value uninterrupted essentials during an outage.

Northern Powergrid DNO process

G98 and G99 — what Northern Powergrid needs for your battery

Every home battery installed across the North East is connected under one of two Engineering Recommendations published by the Energy Networks Association — G98 or G99. Because we operate inside the Northern Powergrid licence area (Tyne and Wear, Durham, Northumberland, Teesside and most of North Yorkshire), every battery install we commission is notified to Northern Powergrid specifically, on their portal, using their forms.

G98 (Connect and Notify) — batteries ≤ 3.68kW per phase

Single smaller batteries — a 5kWh Solis + Pylontech, a single SolarEdge Home Battery on a small inverter, a Fox EVO at lower inverter setting — fall under G98. We commission the install, then notify Northern Powergrid within 28 days. No pre-install approval needed. Quick, low-friction.

G99 (Apply and Connect) — batteries above 3.68kW per phase

Tesla Powerwall, Sigenergy SigenStor, stacked Pylontech packs and any 5kW+ hybrid inverter setup need a G99 application submitted to Northern Powergrid before install. Their engineering team reviews the local network capacity at your postcode and issues an "Offer to Connect" — typically inside 10-15 working days for a standard domestic single-phase property in the North East. We handle the form, the technical schedule, the wiring diagrams and the follow-up.

North East quirks worth knowing

In parts of Sunderland, Hartlepool and the South Tyneside coast the local LV network has constrained headroom, so Northern Powergrid occasionally cap export at less than the inverter's rated output (e.g. 3.68kW export on a 5kW inverter). That doesn't reduce battery capacity or self-consumption — it only affects what you can sell back via SEG. We flag this in your quote before you commit.
