Solar panels for gyms & leisure centres

Commercial solar for UK gyms and leisure centres. Air handling + cardio + lighting baseload + bimodal peaks make solar + battery a strong economic fit. AIA capital allowance brings net cost ~25% below retail.

Why gyms are a strong fit for solar + battery

UK gyms have a distinctive bimodal demand profile: morning peak 06:00-09:00 (commuter rush), midday plateau 10:00-16:00 (off-peak baseload from HVAC + AHU + lighting), evening peak 17:00-22:00 (post-work rush). Solar generation peaks midday — between the two demand peaks.

Without a battery: solar-only gyms achieve ~35% self-consumption (midday generation outstrips midday demand; surplus exports). With a 20-40 kWh battery: the midday surplus charges the battery, which discharges into the morning and evening peaks. Self-consumption rises to 75-85% — and the high-value evening-peak demand is precisely when grid import would otherwise cost 27-30p/kWh.

Battery is therefore essential to gym solar economics. The pairing payback is 4-6 years vs 7-9 years for solar-only.

Air handling dominates gym energy

Air handling units (AHU) and HVAC are typically the single largest gym electricity load — 40-55% of total bill for a typical 1,500-3,000 m² mid-size gym. Modern variable-speed AHU runs continuously during opening hours, providing a substantial daytime baseload that matches well with solar generation.

Solar-powered AHU on a sunny day can deliver 60-80% of total AHU energy from solar. Combined with battery covering the evening peaks, gyms commonly achieve 75-90% total self-consumption on a typical UK day.

Payback economics

A typical 40 kWp gym solar install in the North East costs £55,000 retail. Adding a 20 kWh battery brings total to £67,000. After Annual Investment Allowance (100% tax deduction year 1) at 25% Corporation Tax main rate, net effective cost is £50,250.

Annual generation: 35,000 kWh. Self-consumption with battery: 28,000 kWh × 27p = £7,560 saved. Export: 7,000 kWh × 15p = £1,050 SEG income. Total annual benefit £8,610. Payback: 5.8 years on net cost.

National gym chain framework procurement

We're an approved supplier on some national gym chain ESG decarbonisation frameworks. PureGym, The Gym Group, Anytime Fitness, Énergie Fitness, JD Gyms increasingly have central programmes. If your gym is part of a national group, check with central facilities — direct-award routes save 4-8 weeks vs open tender.

Install timing for opening hours

We schedule installs to avoid disrupting opening hours:

  • Off-peak day installs: Mon-Tue mid-morning for most independent gyms (lowest member traffic).
  • Night-shift installs: 24/7 gyms require night work (22:00-04:00) — we accommodate with night crew at modest premium.
  • National chain rollouts: coordinated centrally; typical 6-12 week portfolio rollout per region.

Gym solar — your questions

How much can a gym save with solar?

A typical UK independent gym has annual electricity costs of £15,000-£60,000 driven by HVAC + air handling (often 50% of bill), cardio equipment, lighting, hot water for showers (where electric), and refrigeration for protein/drinks bar. A 25-80 kWp solar array offsets 30-50% of consumption depending on opening hours. Annual savings: £4,000-£18,000. Payback 4-6 years with AIA capital allowance.

Will solar work for a gym with morning + evening peaks?

With a battery, yes. Gyms have a distinctive bimodal demand profile — 06:00-09:00 morning peak (early commuters) and 17:00-22:00 evening peak (post-work). Solar generation peaks 10:00-16:00 — between the two demand peaks. A 20-40 kWh battery captures midday solar surplus and discharges through both peaks. Self-consumption rises from 35% (solar-only) to 75-85% (solar + battery). Pairing is essential for gym payback economics.

Will solar power air handling and HVAC?

Yes — and air handling is typically the single largest gym electricity consumer (40-55% of total bill). Modern variable-speed AHU and HVAC plant runs continuously during opening hours, providing a substantial baseload that matches well with daytime solar generation. Solar-powered air handling can deliver 60-80% of total AHU energy on a sunny gym day.

Can I claim capital allowances?

Yes — commercial solar qualifies for 100% Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) deduction in year 1, up to £1m AIA cap. A £55,000 gym solar install delivers £55,000 deduction from taxable profits, saving £13,750 in Corporation Tax at 25% main rate. Net effective install cost drops from £55,000 to £41,250.

What about national gym chain frameworks?

We're an approved supplier on some national gym chain ESG frameworks. PureGym, The Gym Group, Anytime Fitness, Énergie Fitness, JD Gyms increasingly have central decarbonisation programmes. If your gym is part of a national group, check with central facilities team — direct-award routes save 4-8 weeks vs open tender.

How does install affect gym opening hours?

Most installs avoid opening hour disruption. Scaffolding goes up 1 day before; install runs over 3-5 consecutive non-peak hours (typically Sun-Mon mornings 09:00-15:00 for off-peak hours, or 22:00-04:00 for 24/7 sites). National chain sites typically require night-shift install which we accommodate with night crew at modest premium.
