How to fund it

Four ways to pay for a commercial install

100% allowance

Capital allowances

Deduct 100% of the install cost from taxable profits in year 1 under the Annual Investment Allowance (£1m cap). Applies to solar, battery, EV charging, heat pump and boiler installations. Our invoices come capital-allowance-ready.

Up to 100% grant

PSDS (public sector)

Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme — up to 100% capital grant for eligible academy trusts, LA schools, NHS estates, councils and emergency services. We support the PSDS application alongside our design package.

£0 capex

PPA / operating lease

A Power Purchase Agreement lets you install solar with zero upfront cost — a third party owns the system, you buy the electricity at a discount to grid. Or operating-lease your full renewable package over 7-15 years off balance sheet.

0% Salix

Salix finance

Salix offers interest-free loans to public-sector bodies for energy-efficiency projects. Repayment schedule typically matches the energy-saving payback. Good fit for schools, councils and NHS where PSDS isn't available.

Commercial renewables — your questions

What is the typical payback period for commercial solar?

Most commercial solar installations pay for themselves within 3-5 years. Larger systems with high self-consumption rates (warehouses with daytime operations) often see payback in 3-4 years. Variable site shading, roof orientation, and electricity tariff structure all affect the figure — our site survey provides a project-specific model.

Can my business claim capital allowances on a renewable install?

Yes — commercial solar, battery storage, EV charging and heat pumps all qualify for capital allowances. Most installs claim 100% first-year allowance under the Annual Investment Allowance (£1m limit), letting you deduct the full cost from taxable profits in the year of installation. We provide a capital-allowance-ready invoice with every commercial project.

What is PSDS and who qualifies?

The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) provides grants of up to 100% of capital cost for eligible public-sector buildings including academy trusts, LA-maintained schools, NHS estates, councils and emergency services. We support PSDS applications alongside our heat-loss survey and design package. Round 4 closed; Round 5 is expected to open Q3 2026.

Do you handle multi-site rollouts?

Yes. We run multi-site programmes for hotel chains, academy trusts, care home groups and logistics operators. The typical pattern is a portfolio-wide site survey + design package, followed by phased installation around operating constraints. Centralised reporting and maintenance contracts available.

Can renewable installs be financed without capex?

Yes — three routes work for most businesses: (1) operating-lease asset finance via Siemens/BNP/Société Générale; (2) PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) where a third party owns the array and you buy the electricity at a discount to grid rate; (3) Salix interest-free finance for public-sector borrowers. We can introduce you to our finance partners as part of the quote.

How long does a typical commercial install take?

It depends on scale and on-site complexity. A 50 kWp office solar install typically takes 5-7 days on site after the design and DNO consent are complete. A 500 kWp warehouse solar + battery typically 4-6 weeks. Commercial heat pumps are usually 2-3 weeks on site, plus 2-3 months upfront for design, DNO/G99 approval and PSDS or capital allowance documentation.

Do you provide ESG / carbon-reporting data?

Yes — every commercial install includes a monitoring portal showing realtime generation, self-consumption, export and CO₂ offset figures. We provide quarterly and annual reports formatted for SECR, ESG and Scope 2 emissions reporting. Larger clients can have API access to feed directly into their sustainability dashboards.

What aftercare and maintenance is available?

All commercial installs come with a 12-month defects warranty and optional planned maintenance contracts (PMC). PMC typically covers annual inspection, performance audit, F-Gas compliance (for AC), gas-safety check (for boilers) and 24-hour response SLA. We retain Heat Geek-trained and F-Gas-qualified engineers in-house — no subcontracted maintenance.
