DNO applications
DNO application help — North East
Every solar PV, battery storage, EV charger and heat pump install in the UK needs to be notified to your Distribution Network Operator (DNO). We handle the G98 or G99 application as part of every install — you never have to deal with the DNO directly.
The North East is served primarily by Northern Powergrid, with small edge cases covered by NGED in western Durham and SP Energy Networks in northern Northumberland. Each DNO has different application portals, technical thresholds, and processing times. We submit to all three and know the quirks of each.
Northern Powergrid
Most of the North East — Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, County Durham, Tees Valley (east), most of North Yorkshire
Towns covered: Newcastle · Gateshead · Sunderland · South Shields · Durham · Darlington · Hartlepool · Stockton-on-Tees · …
Primary DNO for AMP Renewables work. We submit ~95% of our G98/G99 applications to Northern Powergrid.
National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED)
Small western strip of County Durham bordering the Lake District, occasional rural Northumberland farms
Towns covered: Alston (rural) · Some Yorkshire Dales fringe areas
Edge case for our service area. Different application portal and fee structure to Northern Powergrid.
SP Energy Networks (Scottish Power Distribution)
Far northern Northumberland near the Scottish border (rare)
Towns covered: Berwick-upon-Tweed · Wooler · Border villages
Cross-border installs — SPN handles a small slice of our customer geography. Different settlement framework.
G98 vs G99 — quick reference
What's the difference between G98 and G99?
G98
Notification only
For single-phase generation up to 16A per phase (~3.68 kW). Includes most domestic solar PV systems and EV chargers. Notification is post-install — DNO is told within 28 days of commissioning. No upfront approval needed.
G99
Application + approval
For systems above 16A per phase (>3.68 kW single-phase or any three-phase). Larger solar arrays, commercial systems, battery storage above certain thresholds, V2H/V2G chargers. Requires DNO approval BEFORE install — typically 11-45 days for residential, longer for commercial.
