SP Energy Networks — DNO

SP Energy Networks solar G99 (northern Northumberland)

For the small Scottish-border strip of Northumberland served by SP Energy Networks rather than Northern Powergrid. Berwick-upon-Tweed, Wooler, and the border villages. We hold SPN portal credentials and submit applications in-house.

When SPN applies

SP Energy Networks covers only the northernmost border strip of our service area — typically Berwick-upon-Tweed (TD15), Wooler (NE71) and immediate border villages. Most of Northumberland — Morpeth, Hexham, Cramlington, Blyth — is Northern Powergrid territory. Check your electricity bill for the DNO name + registration number.

SP Energy Networks — your questions

Who is SP Energy Networks?

SP Energy Networks (Scottish Power Distribution and Scottish Power Manweb) operates the electricity distribution network across most of central and southern Scotland, plus parts of Cheshire, Merseyside and North Wales. In our service area they cover a tiny northern strip along the Scottish border — Berwick-upon-Tweed, Wooler, and the immediate border villages.

Does SPN cover the rest of Northumberland?

No — most of Northumberland is Northern Powergrid territory. Only the northernmost border strip is SP Energy Networks. If you're in Newcastle, Morpeth, Hexham, Cramlington or Blyth, your DNO is Northern Powergrid not SPN. Only border-adjacent properties (typically TD postcode area) fall into SPN.

How do SPN applications differ from Northern Powergrid?

Same G98/G99 framework, different portal (connect.spenergynetworks.co.uk) and slightly different processing times. SPN typically take 14-30 working days for residential G99. Their network is generally less constrained than Northern Powergrid's urban areas, so export limiting is rarer.

Does AMP Renewables cover SPN areas?

Yes — we cover all of Northumberland including the Scottish border strip served by SPN. We submit applications via the SPN portal in-house. Travel costs may be slightly higher for sites in Berwick-upon-Tweed or beyond (typically £100-£250 extra depending on visit count), and we may bundle survey visits to reduce trips.

Are there any specific SPN technical requirements?

SPN follow the same ENA Engineering Recommendations as all UK DNOs (G98, G99, ENA Type Test approved inverter list). Their commissioning standards are aligned with the rest of the UK. The only operational difference is the portal interface and the regional engineering depots that handle commissioning queries.

What about cross-border installs (England to Scotland)?

The DNO is determined by the property's postcode, regardless of which side of the political border you're on. A property in Berwick-upon-Tweed (English postcode TD15) sits in SPN's England Public Distribution Network area. A property a mile north in Coldstream (Scottish postcode TD12) sits in SPN's Scotland area — different licence but the customer-facing process is identical.

Northern Northumberland install? We cover the SPN areas too.

We hold credentials on all three DNO portals (Northern Powergrid, NGED, SP Energy Networks). You don't need to know which one serves you — we'll check and submit the right application.
