A typical EV pack holds 60-90 kWh — four to eight times the capacity of a stationary home battery — and with the right bidirectional charger it can charge overnight at off-peak rates and run your entire home through the expensive evening peak. The catch: only a short list of cars support it, and the car must be paired with the right charger. What each car can actually do
Nissan Leaf — the CHAdeMO original
The Leaf is where UK V2H started. Its CHAdeMO port carries DC in both directions, which is why it was doing vehicle-to-home years before the CCS world caught up. With 62 of usable battery it can carry a typical North East household through the full evening peak with plenty in reserve for the morning commute. Current status: confirmed, paired with Indra V2H (CHAdeMO).
V2H proven on 24-62 kWh CHAdeMO Leafs, but Indra V2H units were trial-only and are not on general UK sale. Working hardware exists; you cannot currently buy it new. Because CHAdeMO is a mature standard, the charging hardware is proven and the integration is the most predictable install we do. The trade-off is that the connector is being phased out across the wider industry, so a Leaf-based V2H setup is a known quantity today rather than a ten-year platform. For Leaf owners on an off-peak overnight tariff the economics stack up immediately: charge cheap after midnight, discharge into the 4pm-7pm peak, repeat.
Nissan Ariya
The Ariya is Nissan's move from CHAdeMO into the CCS era, and it brings V2H with it. Usable capacity is 87, which puts a full day of average household consumption inside the pack with margin to spare. Current status: firmware-pending, with the recommended pairing being Nissan Energy (TBC).
V2X indicated under the Nissan Energy programme; no confirmed UK V2H date or charger pairing yet. For buyers choosing an EV specifically to run their home, the Ariya is one of the most future-proof picks on this list: a mainstream manufacturer with a decade of bidirectional experience, on the connector standard the rest of the market is converging on. Pair it with a solar array and the household can run largely self-sufficient across summer, exporting any surplus under the Smart Export Guarantee.
BYD
BYD builds its own batteries and its own power electronics, which shows in how quickly it has moved on bidirectional charging. The UK picture per model:
- BYD Dolphin (CCS, 60) — confirmed. Pairing: Zaptec Pro (Octopus Power Pack bundle). The UK's first commercial V2G offer (launched June 2025): BYD car + bidirectional Zaptec Pro + Octopus Power Pack tariff. Bundle-only — not available as a standalone charger purchase.
- BYD Atto 3 (CCS, 60.5) — v2l-only. Pairing: None. V2L as standard; not part of the Octopus Power Pack V2G bundle at launch, which centres on the Dolphin.
BYD's Blade LFP chemistry is well suited to daily V2H cycling — LFP packs tolerate frequent shallow cycles better than most NMC chemistries, which softens the degradation question for owners planning to discharge into the peak every evening.
Renault 5
The reborn Renault 5 is the most affordable route onto this list. It carries a CCS connector and 52 of usable battery — smaller than the SUVs above, but still two to four times the size of a typical stationary home battery. Current status: confirmed, paired with Mobilize PowerBox Verso.
11 kW AC bidirectional charger built in. Mobilize V2G service launched in France 2024; UK deployment during 2026. The cleanest factory V2G design on sale. Renault has been loud about bidirectional capability as a headline feature rather than a footnote, and the car's price point changes the V2H payback maths: when the vehicle itself is one of the cheapest new EVs on sale, the incremental cost of turning it into a home power station is easier to justify. For a smaller household with modest evening consumption, the 5 covers the peak comfortably.
Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5
The Hyundai-Kia E-GMP platform cars are the ones most often assumed to do V2H, because both are marketed hard on bidirectional power. The reality per our verification:
- Kia EV6 (CCS, 77.4) — v2l-only. Pairing: None. V2L as standard; no confirmed UK V2H pathway despite sharing the E-GMP platform with the EV9.
- Hyundai Ioniq 5 (CCS, 77.4) — v2l-only. Pairing: None. V2L (3.6 kW) as standard. Hyundai has run V2X trials but has never officially confirmed UK V2H, and Wallbox has not confirmed Ioniq 5 for the Quasar 2.
The distinction matters: a three-pin adapter that runs a kettle from the car is not the same thing as your consumer unit drawing from the pack automatically at 6pm. If either badge is on your driveway, check the status column above before budgeting for a bidirectional charger — the hardware only pays for itself when the car can actually feed the house.
Cupra Born and the VW ID family
The Volkswagen Group MEB platform cars share their electrical architecture, so their bidirectional story moves together. Current verified status per model:
- Cupra Born (77 kWh) (CCS, 77) — confirmed. Pairing: Wallbox Quasar 2. One of the two vehicles Wallbox has confirmed for Quasar 2 bidirectional operation. 58 kWh Born variants are not included.
- Volkswagen ID.3 / ID.4 / ID.5 / ID.7 (77 kWh) (CCS, 77) — firmware-pending. Pairing: HagerEnergy S10 E Compact (not yet sold in UK). All 77 kWh ID. models are "BiDi ready" via software 3.5 OTA, but V2H works only with the Hager S10 E Compact DC home power station, which has no confirmed UK availability. Smaller-battery ID. variants excluded.
Where a model shows true V2H it needs the exact charger pairing listed — MEB discharge is tightly controlled by software version, and an otherwise identical car on older firmware may only manage V2L. We confirm the software prerequisite as part of the survey, before any hardware is ordered.
MG
MG has made bidirectional power a selling point across its range, but the small print matters — the current UK position per model:
- MG ZS EV / MG4 / MG5 (CCS, 64) — v2l-only. Pairing: None. V2L on selected trims (up to 3.3 kW). No MG-approved or UK-certified V2H pathway — forum reports of DIY V2H setups are not a supported product.
MG's value pricing makes it a popular first EV in the North East, so we field more V2H questions about these cars than almost any other badge. The honest answer is in the status column: where a model is V2L only, the right home-energy move is a stationary battery alongside a standard smart charger rather than waiting on a bidirectional retrofit that may never be certified for that model year.
Tesla — not supported
No Tesla currently sold in the UK supports V2H: the All models (3, Y, S, X) (CCS, 75) is not-supported. Tesla's commercial position is that home backup belongs to its stationary battery product, so bidirectional discharge to the house remains disabled regardless of which charger you fit. Beyond the charger itself, a compliant V2H installation needs three things a standard EV charger install does not. First, DNO G99 consent: because the charger can export, the district network operator must approve the connection before it is energised — we submit the application and typically have consent back within a few weeks. Second, isolation switchgear: a compliant changeover and isolation arrangement at the consumer unit so the installation disconnects safely during a grid outage. Third, export metering: a SMETS2 smart meter so any energy that does flow to the grid is measured and paid — the same meter requirement as the Smart Export Guarantee.

The three terms get blurred in car marketing, and the blurring costs buyers real money. V2L is a feature of the car alone — useful, free, and irrelevant to your electricity bill. V2H is a property installation: the car becomes part of your home's energy system, shifting consumption from peak to off-peak automatically. V2G adds a commercial layer on top, selling stored energy back to the grid when prices spike, but it depends on supplier tariffs that are still rolling out in the UK. Our advice for 2026: buy for V2H capability, treat V2G upside as a bonus that arrives with tariff maturity, and never pay charger money for a car that only does V2L. When will V2H be mainstream in the UK?
The direction of travel is clear even if the pace is not. The compatible-car list on this page grows every quarter as manufacturers ship bidirectional-ready software on CCS models, and charger certification — the real bottleneck — is accelerating now the first UK-approved units are in the field. Grid-side, the DNOs have moved G99 processing for small export devices from a paper exercise to a largely standardised approval, and smart tariffs already reward exactly the charge-cheap, discharge-at-peak behaviour V2H automates.
Our working view: V2H shifts from early-adopter to normal-option territory over the next two to three years, in the same way home batteries did between 2020 and 2024. The practical takeaway for anyone buying an EV in 2026 is simple — check the status column above before you order, because choosing a confirmed-compatible car today costs nothing extra and keeps the option open for the life of the vehicle.

Is V2H worth it?
Run the numbers before falling for the concept. The saving comes from arbitrage: charging the car at an off-peak overnight rate and running the home from the pack through the peak. A household importing 8-10 kWh across a typical evening peak, displaced at a 15-20p/kWh spread between off-peak and peak rates, saves roughly £450-£700 a year — more with an EV-specific tariff, less if someone is home consuming heavily off-peak anyway. Against a fitted cost of £300-£6,100, that puts realistic payback in the range of five to nine years for a car that sits on the driveway most evenings.
Two honest caveats. First, availability: the car has to be home and plugged in during the peak to earn its keep — a commuter car that returns at 7pm misses most of the value, and a stationary battery (see our best home battery guide) may suit that household better. Second, degradation: daily V2H cycling is shallow and gentle, and trial data puts the additional wear at low single-digit percentage points over a decade, but it is not zero and you should count it. Where V2H wins outright is capacity per pound — you have already bought a battery four to eight times bigger than anything we could bolt to your wall. If the car is on the driveway at 6pm most nights, the charger is the only missing piece.
