Workplace Charging Scheme
£350 × 40 sockets per business site
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) gives businesses up to £14,000 (£350 × 40 sockets) towards EV chargepoint installs at their premises. Run by OZEV, it's the main capital subsidy for staff and visitor EV charging — and it makes commercial chargepoint payback materially shorter when combined with smart load management and tariff arbitrage.
Eligibility
Who qualifies for WCS
- Registered business, charity or public-sector body
- Sites must have dedicated off-street parking
- Chargepoints must be OZEV-approved (Project EV, Rolec, EO, Zappi business, etc.)
- Maximum 40 sockets per WCS application per applicant
- Smart chargers required (OCPP-compliant, schedulable)
- Sites in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland
Not eligible
Who's excluded
- Sites with no off-street parking
- Public-access chargepoints (use ChargePoint Operator funds instead)
- Non-smart "dumb" chargepoints
- Domestic dwellings (use OZEV Residential Chargepoint Scheme)
The process
How WCS works, end to end
We handle the entire application — you never speak to the granting body. The grant is paid to AMP and deducted directly from your invoice.
1. Site survey + load assessment
We assess existing electrical supply, available parking, peak demand profile and smart-charger load-management options.
2. WCS application via OZEV portal
We submit the application on your behalf — usually approved within 5-10 working days.
3. Voucher issued
OZEV issues a unique voucher code valid for 6 months. The voucher reserves the grant.
4. Install
Project EV, Rolec or EO commercial chargers — single-phase or three-phase depending on site supply. Multi-socket installs use load management to maximise sockets per supply.
5. Voucher redemption
We claim the grant against the voucher post-install. £350 per socket is deducted from your final invoice.
6. Ongoing maintenance / OCPP integration
WCS chargepoints connect to back-office software (Monta, Octopus Electroverse, Zap-Map fleet) for driver billing, scheduling and reporting.
Context
What you need to know
WCS is the dominant subsidy for workplace EV charging in the UK. Combined with the Capital Allowance treatment for plant and machinery, total effective cost reduction for a business is often 35-45% of headline install cost.
For multi-site businesses, WCS applies per-applicant per-site — a portfolio of 5 sites can claim up to 5 × 40 × £350 = £70,000 across the estate. Our preferred structure is a single multi-site framework agreement to manage rollout consistency.
Smart load management is the difference between needing an expensive grid supply upgrade and not. A single 100A three-phase supply can power 12-16 chargers under smart load balancing — without it, only 4-6.
