BUS

Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Up to £9,000

£7,500 standard · £9,000 oil/LPG households (summer 2026)

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is the UK's primary residential heat pump grant. Administered by Ofgem, it pays a fixed grant directly to the installer who deducts it from your quote. From summer 2026 the grant rises to £9,000 for households currently heated by oil, LPG or coal — a £1,500 uplift that's particularly relevant for rural Northumberland and County Durham properties.

Eligibility

Who qualifies for BUS

  • Property in England or Wales (Scotland uses Home Energy Scotland Grant)
  • Valid EPC with no outstanding insulation recommendations (or exemption)
  • Currently heated by mains gas, oil, LPG, coal or direct electric resistance
  • Replacement of the existing heating system in full (no parallel hybrids)
  • MCS-certified installer (AMP is MCS certified)
  • Property owner gives consent

Not eligible

Who's excluded

  • New-build properties (built within last 12 months — different scheme applies)
  • Social housing with grant funding already in place via RHI legacy
  • Off-grid properties already running RHI-eligible biomass
  • Properties without a valid EPC

The process

How BUS works, end to end

We handle the entire application — you never speak to the granting body. The grant is paid to AMP and deducted directly from your invoice.

1

1. Free survey + heat-loss calculation

Our engineer assesses the property and produces a designed system to MCS standards.

2

2. Fixed-price quote with grant deducted

The figure you see is the net cost after BUS — £7,500 for gas/electric households, £9,000 for oil/LPG.

3

3. BUS voucher application

We submit the application to Ofgem (typically issued within 2-4 weeks).

4

4. Install scheduled

Typically 4-10 weeks from accepted quote.

5

5. MCS-certified install completed

We issue paperwork and Building Control notification.

6

6. Final paperwork to Ofgem

They release the grant payment to us within 30 days.

7

7. Your invoice nets off the grant

You only ever paid the net figure.

Context

What you need to know

BUS is currently funded through to early 2028 with the £7,500 / £9,000 tiers. Government policy on heat pump support has been broadly stable over the last 18 months, but applying sooner rather than later removes timing risk — the budget is allocated annually and could be paused at short notice.

A particular note on the enhanced £9,000 tier: it applies to households currently heated by oil, LPG or coal, which covers a large share of rural Northumberland and County Durham properties. These households see the biggest running-cost saving from a heat pump (oil and LPG are price-volatile and expensive), making the post-grant payback period 4-6 years rather than 10+ on a gas-grid swap.

BUS FAQs

Do I pay the grant up front and claim it back?

No. The grant is paid to AMP, who deducts it from your invoice. You only ever pay the net figure.

Can I have a hybrid heat pump / boiler under BUS?

No — BUS requires full replacement of the existing heating system. If you want to keep a backup boiler, that disqualifies you from the grant.

What if my EPC has outstanding recommendations?

You must address loft / cavity insulation recommendations before BUS approves the application. We can help coordinate this; alternatively the property may qualify for an exemption certificate.

Is the £9,000 enhanced grant retrospective?

No. Quotes accepted before the enhanced grant goes live (summer 2026) will use the £7,500 figure. If you're on oil or LPG, it may pay to wait for the higher band to be active before applying.
