Property
4,200 ft² single-storey veterinary practice, 1990s build, previously oil-heated
The practice's 1990s oil-fired boiler failed in November 2025 with a heat exchanger crack. The practice manager called us with a 2-week deadline to restore reliable heat before winter peak. Oil boiler replacement was the fast option (£8,500, 3 days) but the practice owners had been considering decarbonisation for ESG reasons and were interested in the heat pump alternative.
We delivered a 24-hour scoped feasibility (heat loss calc + grant routes review + DNO check) showing the heat pump route at £49,500 retail — but with capital allowances (100% AIA write-off in year 1) the net cost dropped to £37,000 for a basic-rate taxpayer practice. The £8,500 saving over the oil boiler retail price came back as £18,400/year of avoided oil costs. The math made the heat pump the better economic option even with the higher upfront.
The Mitsubishi Ecodan EAHV-P900YA was chosen for the M-Net BMS integration (the practice runs a clinical management system with critical-temperature monitoring on the surgical theatre) and for the strongest UK service network — emergency callout response inside 24 hours matters more for a clinical setting than for residential.
Install was phased over 3 consecutive Sundays + the practice's annual closed week between Christmas and New Year. Heat was bridged with 2× 6 kW portable electric heaters during commissioning. Final commissioning completed 4 January 2026. No clinical hours disrupted.
After 4 months of winter operation the heat pump has delivered a SCOP of 3.6 — within design estimate. The £18,400 annual saving vs the prior oil bills is on track. The practice received a £1,200 marketing-asset uplift from their professional body for ESG decarbonisation reporting, used in pet-owner communications.
