What a Stockton install actually involves

Stockton’s housing stock splits cleanly into two eras, and it changes how we design a system.

1930s bay-fronted semis — Hartburn, Norton, Fairfield, Bishopsgarth. These homes typically have hipped roofs, which means two or three smaller roof faces rather than one large gable-to-gable plane. The usual design is a split array — for example six panels on the rear face and four on a side hip — feeding one inverter. Original clay tiles are brittle, so we use tile-appropriate hooks and carry spares. Norton Village is a conservation area: panels are still very achievable, but siting on street-facing slopes needs care, and we advise on this at survey.

Modern estates — Ingleby Barwick, Elm Tree, Roseworth and the newer TS22/TS23 developments. Ingleby Barwick alone has around 20,000 homes built from the 1980s onwards, most with concrete interlocking tiles, trussed roofs and generous south- or west-facing aspects. These are the most straightforward installs in the borough — a clean single-face 4-6kW array, done in a day, with almost no conservation constraints.

Older terraces — Oxbridge and the town centre. Smaller roof areas suit 3-3.5kW systems, and rear-facing arrays keep the street elevation untouched. Yarm’s period properties sit in a conservation area, so the same sympathetic-siting approach as Norton applies.
