Do UK solar panels need cleaning? Honest guide to when cleaning is worth it, how much it costs, who should do it, and the cases where rainfall does the job for free.

The honest answer to “do my solar panels need cleaning?” is: probably not, but it depends. UK rainfall does most of the work for free on standard residential installs at a typical 25-40° roof pitch. Commercial flat-roof installs and panels in specific environments do benefit from professional cleaning. The general rule: don’t pay for cleaning unless you have evidence it’s worth it.

Here’s how to work out which category you’re in.

The default position: rainfall is doing the job

A flat-tilted solar panel sheds water at roughly the same rate as your roof tiles. Heavy rain — which the UK has reliable supply of — washes the bulk of dust and pollen straight off. Standard residential solar panels installed at 25-40° pitch experience roughly 10-15 substantial rainfall events per year that effectively self-clean the surface.

For most North East residential installs at standard pitch, this is enough. Independent testing of self-cleaning vs cleaned residential panels in UK conditions consistently shows the difference is under 3-5% of annual generation — sometimes within measurement noise. At an average 4kW system generating 3,500 kWh/year, 3% is roughly £30 of lost revenue per year. Cleaning that costs £150-250 doesn’t make economic sense to recover £30 of generation, especially when most of that loss recovers automatically with the next heavy rainfall.

When cleaning genuinely is worth it

Several specific situations push the cleaning case from “no” to “yes”:

1. Pitch under 10° (commercial flat roofs)

Water doesn’t run off flat or near-flat panels. Dust, pollen and bird droppings accumulate. Commercial installs at 5-10° tilt — typical for ballasted warehouse arrays — can lose 8-15% of generation over the course of a year without cleaning. Annual professional cleaning on a 100kW commercial system can recover 8,000-15,000 kWh, worth £1,000-£2,000 at retail prices.

2. High pollution or particulate environments

Properties immediately adjacent to busy main roads, industrial sites, or particulate-heavy locations (cement plants, woodworking yards, certain agricultural settings) accumulate ground-level particulates that don’t wash off as easily. Local context: properties in central Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough or Stockton near major arterial roads sometimes benefit; suburban or rural installs rarely do.

3. Bird-roost streets or tree-overhung roofs

If a panel is regularly covered in bird droppings or sap from overhanging trees, rainfall isn’t enough. Bird droppings in particular create persistent acidic spots that block light and don’t wash off. Tree sap is similar.

4. After major events

Saharan dust events (occasional in the UK, usually in spring) and ash fall from distant volcanic events can deposit a heavier coating than usual. A one-off clean after such events makes sense; doesn’t justify regular ongoing cleaning.

5. Soft-water area scale buildup

Repeated rain in calcium-rich water leaves a scaled film over years. More common in southern England than the North East, but a multi-year-old install can develop a barely-visible scale that benefits from a one-off chemical clean.

6. Verified underperformance

If your monitoring app shows generation has dropped meaningfully below historical baseline and weather doesn’t explain it, cleaning is one of the diagnostic steps. The other diagnostic steps (inverter fault check, optimiser failure check, panel string fault check) are usually cheaper and quicker to rule out first.

What you should not pay for: pressure-washing (damages panels), abrasive cleaning agents (scratches the glass), unnecessary maintenance contracts (worth it only if you have real maintenance issues, not for cleaning alone).

How to clean panels properly

If you decide to clean — or if you’re doing it yourself on an accessible single-storey installation:

For roof-mounted installs on standard 2-storey homes, you need scaffolding or an extended pole system. Most homeowners are better off paying a specialist than risking a fall — solar panel cleaning fatalities are rare but real.

Should you sign an annual maintenance contract?

For residential, almost always no. The justification isn’t there — annual cleaning recovers £20-£40 of generation while costing £180-£300. The contract loses you money every year.

For commercial installs, sometimes yes. A 100kW+ commercial array with annual professional cleaning typically recovers more than the cleaning cost in lost generation, especially on flat or near-flat roofs. Annual contracts also include electrical safety checks and inverter health monitoring, which have genuine value separate from cleaning.

We don’t push residential customers to sign cleaning contracts. We offer them where customers specifically want one (typically retired customers who want hands-off maintenance) but they’re rarely the right economic choice.

What we actually recommend for AMP residential customers

The standard advice we give:

  1. Year 1-2: Don’t clean. Monitor generation through the inverter cloud app. If figures are within 5% of designed expectations, nothing to do.

  2. Year 3-5: Visual inspection from the ground annually. If you can see significant accumulated grime, a one-off £80-£150 clean is reasonable. Otherwise leave it.

  3. Year 6+: Consider a one-off clean if you haven’t done one, mainly because UV-degraded micro-scratches from years of weather exposure can hold trace dirt that rain alone doesn’t shift. Diminishing returns from that point.

  4. Any year with abnormal generation: Investigate inverter fault first, optimiser/microinverter fault second, panel string fault third, cleaning fourth.

What about robotic and self-cleaning systems?

A handful of products on the market claim “self-cleaning” panels or automated cleaning systems:

For residential customers in the UK, none of these technologies move the economic needle.

The bottom line

For a standard residential solar install in the North East at typical roof pitch, you almost certainly don’t need to pay for cleaning. Rainfall does the job. Monitor generation through your inverter app, intervene only if numbers drop unexpectedly, and even then check the obvious diagnostics before booking a clean.

For commercial flat-roof installs and specific high-pollution residential settings, annual or biennial cleaning is genuinely worth it. The economics flip cleanly at 8-10° pitch and below.
